If you are holding a 2026 GIA report for a lab-grown diamond and wondering where the colour and clarity grades went, here is the short answer: they are gone on purpose. On 1 October 2025, GIA stopped grading laboratory-grown diamonds on the familiar 4Cs colour and clarity scale and switched to a simpler two-tier system — a stone is now described as either premium or standard. Your report tells you less than the old one did, but it is not describing a lesser diamond. Nothing about the stone in your hand has changed; only the way this one laboratory chooses to write it up.

What actually changed in October 2025

For years, a GIA lab-grown report looked much like a natural-diamond one: a colour grade from D through Z, a clarity grade running from Flawless down through the SI and I ranges, and separate cut, polish and symmetry assessments. From 1 October 2025, GIA retired that format for lab-grown stones. In its place, the report now carries a single overall descriptor rather than individual colour and clarity grades.

There are only two descriptors. A diamond is either premium or standard, based on GIA's combined read of its colour, clarity, cut, polish and symmetry. A stone that does not clear the bar for "standard" receives no descriptor and no report at all. Natural diamonds are untouched — they still get the full, traditional 4Cs grading. The change applies to lab-grown diamonds only.

Why GIA made this move

GIA's reasoning is worth understanding, because it is really a reflection of how good lab-grown diamonds have become. In plain terms, the institute's position is that the vast majority of lab-grown stones already land at the very top of the colour and clarity scales — they come out of the growth process near-colourless and very clean. When almost everything falls in a narrow band near the top, the fine gradations that matter so much for rare natural stones start to carry less meaning.

GIA also treats lab-grown diamonds as a manufactured product, and argues they deserve their own vocabulary rather than borrowing the language built for natural diamonds over the past century. You can agree with that or not; the practical driver is straightforward. What "premium" and "standard" actually mean

The two tiers are not arbitrary. GIA has published the thresholds behind them, and they set a genuinely high bar.

  • Premium sits at the top of the range: a D-colour equivalent with VVS clarity or better, excellent polish and symmetry, and — for round brilliants — an excellent cut grade.
  • Standard covers a wider but still strong band: roughly E to J colour, VS clarity or better, very good polish and symmetry, and a very good cut grade on round brilliants.

Here is the level-headed reading. A "premium" or "standard" label tells you which tier your diamond sits in, but it deliberately hides the exact colour and clarity within that tier. Two "standard" diamonds can be a real step apart — one an E and VS1, the other closer to J and VS2 — yet wear the same word on the certificate. Why IGI — and Signora — still give you the full 4Cs

Here we can reassure you without any spin. GIA is one respected laboratory, but it is not the only one, and it is not the one most widely used for lab-grown diamonds. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has kept issuing full 4Cs reports for lab-grown stones — an individual colour grade, an individual clarity grade, and cut, polish and symmetry, exactly as before.
