Three-Stone vs Five-Stone Rings: Which Should You Choose?

·Himmat Mangukiya·3 min read
Lab grown diamond three-stone ring beside a five-stone ring, Signora Journal comparison

Choose a three-stone ring if you want one clearly larger centre diamond with two companions; choose a five-stone ring if you want the sparkle spread evenly across the top of the finger. At the same total diamond weight they cost about the same. The real difference is where the weight goes: a three-stone puts most of it in the centre, while a five-stone shares it out.

Three-stone vs five-stone at a glance

Three-stone Five-stone
Focal point One dominant centre diamond A row of near-equal or graduated stones
Typical weight split About 65% in the centre stone About 40% in the centre, or equal stones in a band
Width across the finger Medium Wider, covers more of the finger
Symbolism Past, present and future Often a milestone, such as five years or five family members
Most often worn as Engagement ring Anniversary ring, wedding band or right-hand ring
Wedding band pairing Usually needs a curved or notched band if the setting sits low Often worn alone, or stacked with a thin plain band

Where does the carat weight go?

Two rings with the same total weight can look completely different. Compare these examples from our collections:

Ring Total Centre stone Other stones 14K price
1.01 ct round three-stone 1.01 ct 0.65 ct (5.6 mm) 2 × 0.18 ct $835
2.25 ct round three-stone 2.25 ct 1.45 ct 2 × 0.4 ct $1,333
1.5 ct round five-stone 1.5 ct 0.6 ct 4 graduated, 0.9 ct together $1,009
1.5 ct round five-stone band 1.5 ct None 5 × 0.3 ct, all equal $994
2 ct oval five-stone 2 ct 0.8 ct 4 ovals, 1.2 ct together $1,221

If the size of the centre stone matters most to you, a three-stone gives you a bigger centre for the money. If you want the whole top of the ring to sparkle, a five-stone gives more coverage for the same weight.

What does each style cost?

Typical prices in 14K gold, by total diamond weight, across our lab-grown three-stone and five-stone rings:

Total diamond weight Three-stone (typical) Five-stone (typical)
About 1 ct $761 $792
About 1.5 ct $974 $990
About 2 ct $1,299 $1,237
About 3 ct $1,524 $1,311

Prices are close at every weight. Five-stone rings get relatively cheaper at higher weights because their stones stay smaller, and smaller lab-grown diamonds cost less per carat. Many of our three-stone rings also let you choose the centre size, from 1 ct up to 4.5 ct. Every ring comes with a Signora Jewelry Certificate.

Choose a three-stone ring if...

  • You want an engagement ring with a clear centre diamond.
  • The size of that centre stone matters more than overall coverage.
  • You like the "past, present and future" story.
  • You want to mix shapes, such as an emerald centre with trillion sides, or an oval with pears.

Our three-stone engagement ring guide covers side-stone shapes and settings in more depth.

Choose a five-stone ring if...

Which looks bigger on the hand?

A five-stone ring looks wider; a three-stone ring looks taller and more prominent in the centre. On a slim finger, a three-stone keeps the look balanced. On a longer or wider finger, a five-stone fills the space well. Elongated shapes such as ovals and emerald cuts make either style look larger, as our carat size chart shows.

The bottom line

Pick three stones for a bigger centre and a classic engagement look. Pick five stones for even sparkle, more coverage and a ring that works as well as an anniversary gift as an engagement ring. Compare them side by side in our three-stone rings and five-stone rings collections.
