Choosing colored gemstone jewelry

Wearability starts with hardness

How a stone survives your life is largely a question of hardness. Sapphire and ruby take daily wear in stride and are happy in rings; emerald and opal sit lower on the scale, chip more readily, and are better suited to earrings and pendants — or to protective settings if they must live on a hand. Our gemstone encyclopedia rates each stone for everyday wear before you fall for a color.

Straight answers on treatments

Across the jewelry trade, many colored gemstones receive standard treatments as a matter of routine. There is nothing improper about accepted practice — but you deserve to know exactly what applies to the stone you are buying. Ask us about any piece before you order and we will tell you plainly how its stone was made and finished. If a detail matters to you, it matters to us; that is the whole policy.

Color against metal and skin

Metal changes a stone's temperature: yellow gold deepens warm stones like ruby and golden sapphire, white metals sharpen blues and greens, and rose gold flatters pinks and lavender hues. Hold color near the skin that will wear it — some complexions light up next to warm stones, others next to cool ones. Once chosen, keep each stone's habits in mind; our care guide lists what every stone tolerates.

Gemstone questions, answered

Are your colored gemstones natural or lab-created?

Check the product page for the exact gemstone and origin offered in that design. Every finished piece includes a Signora Jewelry Certificate. Any independent gemstone documentation and its scope are stated on the product page or approved specification.

Can I wear a gemstone ring every day?

It depends on the stone. Sapphire and ruby are hard enough for daily hands; emerald and opal prefer gentler outings or a home in earrings and pendants. Check the stone's entry in the gemstone encyclopedia before making it your everyday ring.

How do I care for colored gemstone jewelry?

Warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft brush suit the durable stones; never put emerald or opal in an ultrasonic cleaner. Store colored pieces apart so harder stones cannot scratch softer ones — the jewelry care and repairs guide goes stone by stone.

How long does a gemstone piece take to arrive?

Standard listed pieces are made to order with an estimated dispatch of 7 business days. Use the product-page estimate when it is more specific and the timing confirmed after ordering. Delivery timing begins after dispatch and varies by destination and carrier service. Fully custom commissions follow the production schedule confirmed with their approved specifications or CAD. Orders of US$500 or more receive free express, insured and tracked international delivery. Below US$500, express, insured and tracked international delivery is charged at the fixed rate shown at checkout. For every destination available at checkout, Signora prepays applicable import duties and import taxes. Customers should not be asked to pay those import charges again on delivery.

What is your return policy on gemstone jewelry?

Standard listed products are eligible for return within 30 days after carrier-recorded delivery when unworn, unused and in their original condition, with the original packaging and included documents. Normal listed choices such as metal, stone carat, chain or bracelet length, an extended ring size, or complimentary engraving do not by themselves make an item Final Sale. A sale or discount also does not imply Final Sale; only an item explicitly classified as Final Sale follows the non-returnable exclusion. A fully custom commission is different from a listed made-to-order design. After its specifications or CAD are approved, a normal change-of-mind return does not apply. Manufacturing defects remain reviewable. Signora may accept an exceptional non-defect return case by case; documented labor and genuinely non-recoverable costs may be deducted, but these deductions are not a restocking fee. Contact Signora for authorization before sending an item. For an eligible authorized standard return, Signora provides a prepaid, insured return label and covers the return courier cost, return transit insurance, and applicable return customs, import duties and import taxes. No restocking fee applies.
