The difference between 24K, 18K, 14K and 9K gold comes down to one simple sum: divide the karat number by 24 and you have the fraction of the metal that is actually gold. So 24K is essentially pure gold (99.9%), 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58.3% gold and 9K is 37.5% gold — the rest is a blend of other metals such as copper, silver, zinc or palladium. That is the whole system. Everything else about karats — the colour differences, the durability differences, the price differences — flows from that one fraction.
We work with gold every day in our Surat workshop, and once someone grasps the parts-per-24 idea, most of the confusion around "converting" karats simply evaporates. Here is the honest version.
A karat (spelled carat in Britain when the subject is gold, and abbreviated K in America or ct here) is a measure of gold purity on a 24-point scale. Imagine any piece of gold jewellery divided into 24 equal parts by weight; the karat number tells you how many of those parts are pure gold. An 18K piece is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals; a 9K piece, 9 parts gold and 15 parts everything else.
One bit of housekeeping: this karat has nothing to do with the carat used for diamonds. A diamond carat is a unit of weight — 0.2 grams — while a gold karat is a unit of purity. The words share an ancient root in the carob seed, once used as a balance weight, but they measure different things. In 9K gold, then, less than half the metal is actually gold. That is not a scandal — it is what the number means, disclosed right there in the stamp — but it is worth knowing before you compare prices, because two identical-looking rings can contain very different amounts of gold.
People often ask us how to "convert" 24K gold into 18K, as though there were a machine that dials purity up or down. The truth is plainer: jewellers alloy gold. To make 18K, a goldsmith takes 75 parts pure gold by weight and melts it with 25 parts of other metals — typically copper, silver and zinc for yellow gold, or palladium and silver for white gold. Going the other way, "converting" a lower karat into a higher one simply means refining the gold back out and starting again with a richer mix.
The choice of those other metals is a genuine recipe, and it is what creates gold's colour family:
And here is the part we would rather you hear from us: rhodium plating wears off. Worn daily, it typically thins over one to three years, letting the slightly warmer alloy beneath show through. Re-plating is a routine, inexpensive service, but it is maintenance, and anyone selling you white gold should say so up front.
Alongside the karat system runs a second, more precise scale called millesimal fineness, which expresses purity in parts per thousand. This is what the tiny numbers stamped inside rings mean:

Sharp-eyed readers will spot that 14 ÷ 24 is 58.33%, yet the mark says 585. That is deliberate: the convention is to alloy 14K slightly rich, so the metal always meets or exceeds the fraction the stamp promises. (Some older pieces, particularly from the former Soviet countries, carry 583 instead — the same karat, rounded the strict way.)
In the UK, these numbers form part of a legally protected hallmark. Under the Hallmarking Act, a gold item weighing more than one gram cannot legally be described or sold as gold unless it carries a hallmark applied by a government-authorised Assay Office. A full UK hallmark includes at least three compulsory marks: the sponsor's (maker's) mark, the fineness number, and the mark of the Assay Office that tested the piece — a leopard's head for London, an anchor for Birmingham, a rose for Sheffield, a castle for Edinburgh. In the US the rules are looser: there is no compulsory hallmarking, and while the Federal Trade Commission's jewellery guides long set 10K as the lowest purity that could be described as gold, a 2018 revision removed that floor — the karatage simply has to be disclosed clearly. Either way, the stamp is your friend. Pure gold is famously soft — the old prospector's trick of biting a coin worked because teeth really can mark high-purity gold. Romantic in a gold bar; impractical in a ring. The other metals in an alloy do more than dilute the gold — they harden it. As a rule of thumb:

Because karat is simply a gold fraction, the gold content of a piece scales directly with it. Take a ring weighing 10 grams:
So an identical design in 9K carries exactly half the gold of the 18K version, and the raw-metal cost moves accordingly. Worth remembering, though: in a finished piece of jewellery the metal is only one part of the price — craftsmanship, setting work and the centre stone usually matter more. There is no universally "best" karat — only the right recipe for how a piece will live. A signet ring worn daily on a busy hand argues for 14K; an heirloom-in-waiting engagement ring wears 18K beautifully; 9K is a perfectly honest budget choice as long as you know what the 375 stamp means. What matters is that the purity is stated, stamped and true.
