The Stone Is the Only Part That Never Wears Out

A lab-grown diamond will not cloud, yellow or lose its fire after thirty years of daily wear. It is carbon in the same crystal lattice as a mined stone, it sits at 10 on the Mohs scale, and nothing you meet in ordinary life is hard enough to scratch it. What wears out is everything holding it. Prong tips thin from the top down. The shank goes thinnest where it presses against your palm. Pavé beads abrade until a small stone works loose. A ring you intend to wear forever is a permanent stone mounted in metal that will want attention two or three times across a lifetime, and that is worth knowing before you buy rather than in year seven.

The one part that genuinely does not wear out

A diamond's colour is fixed at the moment of growth. In a lab-grown stone, the same trace elements that colour a mined diamond — nitrogen sitting where a carbon atom should be, for instance — are locked into the lattice permanently. There is no mechanism by which that drifts. Sunlight does not bleach it, sweat does not stain it, and the years do not warm it towards yellow. If a stone looks duller after a few years, that is a film of skin oil and soap residue sitting on the pavilion rather than the diamond changing. It is the same carbon it was on the day it was set, and the same carbon it will be when someone inherits it. One honest qualification. Hardness is not toughness. Hardness measures resistance to scratching, and on that count nothing beats diamond. Toughness measures resistance to chipping, and there diamond rates merely good rather than exceptional. It has cleavage planes — directions along which the crystal will split if struck at the wrong angle — and the vulnerable spots are a thin girdle and any sharp point: the tips of a marquise, the point of a pear, the corners of a princess. GIA singles out knife-edge girdles and pointed shapes as the higher-risk cases. A knock against a granite worktop can chip an edge that a lifetime of ordinary wear would never have touched. So the stone is permanent without being invulnerable. It is simply the only component that does not degrade gradually.

Prongs thin first, and they thin from the top

Four or six claws hold your stone on contact points measured in tenths of a millimetre, and those tips sit proudest on the whole ring. They meet the doorframe, the car door and the sleeve of every jumper you own. Metal abrades a few microns at a time, and because the tip is where the metal is thinnest to begin with, that is where the loss shows first.

Trade guidance is consistent on the rhythm. Have the setting checked by a bench every six to twelve months, and expect re-tipping somewhere in the region of every five to ten years of daily wear. The range is wide because the variable is you. Nurses, chefs, gardeners, climbers and anyone who works with their hands sit at the short end. Desk work and a habit of taking the ring off sit at the long end. Metal shifts it too: white gold alloys are harder at the surface but more brittle, so their claws are likelier to crack than to wear smooth.

Re-tipping itself is a modest job. The jeweller lays a small bead of fresh metal in the matching alloy onto the worn claw and reshapes it to its original height and curve. The catch is that it only works while there is enough sound metal left to build on. Leave it too long and the claw has to be cut back and replaced outright, or the whole head remade, which is a different order of work and expense. A prong that has begun catching on knitwear is not an annoyance. It is a flattened, hooked tip telling you the clock has run down.

The shank wears where you never look at it

Turn your hand over. The underside of the band takes constant pressure against the palm, and if you wear a wedding band alongside, the two rub metal on metal every time you close your fist. That second factor surprises people, and it is often the larger one. Over a decade or two the shank flattens, then thins, and eventually splits, usually at the very bottom and out of sight until the ring stops feeling round.

The early warnings are worth learning. The band starts to feel oval rather than circular on the finger. You can see a flat facet on the underside where there should be a curve. Under a loupe, a hairline appears. Caught early, a jeweller can add metal or fit a half shank. Caught late, the ring has cracked and the repair is larger — and on an eternity band or a ring with pavé running down the shoulders, larger again, because the stones must be protected or removed before heat goes anywhere near them.

What wears, and roughly what the trade charges

The figures below come from repair prices published openly by American jewellers, checked in August 2026. They are indicative only. UK and Canadian benches quote differently, and every job depends on metal, complexity and how many stones sit near the work. These are not our prices and we do not set them. Treat them as a sense of scale, and get a written estimate before any work starts.

Read the first and third rows together and the shape of the commitment becomes clear. The regular small interventions are cheap. The one you postpone is not.

Construction changes the interval, sometimes by years

A bezel wraps the girdle in a continuous rim of metal. There are no tips to thin, nothing to snag, and the stone's most chip-prone edge is armoured. Jewellers commonly say a well-made bezel runs ten to fifteen years without needing attention, against the six-to-twelve-month check a claw setting wants. The trade-off is optical rather than structural. Less light enters from the sides, so the stone reads a little quieter, and if a bezel is ever knocked out of true, the fix means working metal right up against the diamond.

Six claws spread the load across more points than four, so each tip wears slower and a single failure is less likely to release the stone, though there is more metal over the crown. A cathedral or high-set head lifts the stone away from the finger and straight into everything you knock. Pavé is a question of workmanship more than design: beads formed by hand sit tighter and more evenly than stones cast in place, and micro-prong pavé spreads stress better than plain beads. Well-set pavé rarely sheds stones without a hard knock, but it does ask for an annual look, because a loose stone caught early is a tightening job and a lost one is a replacement.

Metal matters as much as geometry, and not in the way most people assume. Nine-karat gold is harder at the surface and resists scratching better, but the higher proportion of alloy makes it more brittle, and brittleness is what fails claws and thin bands under years of flexing. Eighteen-karat is softer to scratch and more resilient to knocks, deforming rather than cracking. Fourteen sits between them. There is no universally right answer, only a trade-off to make deliberately, and we set it out in full in our guide to what the karat numbers actually mean. For completeness, platinum is the outlier: it displaces metal under wear rather than shedding it, so platinum claws stay substantial for far longer. We work in solid gold, 9 to 18 karat, never plated and never vermeil, so that is context rather than an offer. The questions to put to any bench before you buy

Ask these of us, and of everyone else you are considering. A bench that answers them precisely is a bench that has thought about the next thirty years.

  • What is the prong thickness at the base, and why that dimension for this stone size? A specific number in millimetres is a good sign. Vagueness is not.
  • Is the head cast or hand-fabricated? Both can be excellent. The answer tells you how the maker thinks.
  • How thick is the shank at the bottom? Very slender bands look beautiful and thin through sooner, particularly worn beside a second ring.
  • Is the pavé bead-set or micro-prong, and set by hand? This is the single biggest predictor of whether small stones stay put.
  • Which karat, and why that one for this design? The right answer references the setting's geometry, not just colour.
  • Who services this in year seven, where, and at whose cost? Ask it plainly, get the answer in writing, and be sceptical of anyone who waves it away.

That last question deserves a blunt note. Any ring bought online, from us or from anyone, will in practice be maintained by a good bench near where you live, because that is where it will be when a claw starts catching. Worth finding that jeweller early rather than in a hurry, and worth asking what they charge before you need them.
