Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Same crystal, different birthplace — and a very different price. This is the honest, side-by-side comparison for deciding which origin belongs on your hand.

The short answer

They are the same stone with two different origins. A lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond are both pure crystallized carbon — identical hardness, identical brilliance, graded on the same 4Cs — and only laboratory instruments can tell them apart. One grows in a reactor in weeks; the other formed underground over a billion years or more. At equal grades, lab-grown costs meaningfully less, which is why it is our default. Neither origin reliably holds resale value, so choose for beauty, meaning and budget — not for what a resale market might someday pay.

The real difference

One material, two birthplaces

Strip away the marketing and one fact remains: a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond are the same material. Both are pure carbon arranged in the same cubic crystal, which is why both measure 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, handle light identically and take the same polish. In 2018 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission removed the word “natural” from its definition of a diamond — a regulator’s way of saying that origin does not change what the stone is.

So this guide is not about which one is real. Both are. It is about the two things that genuinely differ — where the crystal formed and what it costs — and the honest consequences of each: certification wording, price behavior, environmental footprint and resale. Origin

Weeks in a reactor, a billion years underground

A natural diamond crystallized deep in the Earth’s mantle, mostly between one and three billion years ago, and reached the surface in ancient volcanic eruptions. Miners then have to find it — sifting tonnes of ore for a single carat of gem-quality rough.

A lab-grown diamond skips the geology. A thin seed of diamond goes into a growth chamber, carbon is supplied — under extreme pressure and heat (HPHT) or from a carbon-rich plasma (CVD) — and the crystal builds up over roughly three to four weeks. The physics of crystallization is exactly the same; only the setting changed.

Here is what matters for a buyer: the finished crystals are indistinguishable as material. The billion-year head start produces a story, not a different stone. Whether that story is worth a premium to you is precisely the decision this guide is for.

Appearance

Can you see the difference?

Put a lab-grown and a natural diamond of the same grades side by side and no one — you, your jeweler, a gemologist with a loupe — can reliably say which is which. Both are graded on the same 4Cs: color, cut, clarity and carat, by the same laboratories, on the same scales. An F-color, VS1, excellent-cut stone sparkles like an F-color, VS1, excellent-cut stone, whatever its birthplace.

Telling them apart takes laboratory instruments that read growth patterns — the microscopic record of how the crystal formed layer by layer — or characteristic fluorescence under specific wavelengths. That is why the paperwork, not the appearance, is where origin lives in this market. Many certified stones also carry a microscopic laser inscription on the girdle matching the report number, readable only under magnification.

What the grading report tells you

Both origins can be graded by major independent laboratories. At Signora, each approved individual lab-grown center or primary diamond of 0.50 ct or more includes an independent IGI grading report. For diamonds below 0.50 ct, natural diamonds and other stones, independent documentation is included only when the product page or approved specification states the laboratory, report type and scope.

The difference is disclosure. A lab-grown diamond’s report states that the stone is laboratory-grown and may name the growth method (CVD or HPHT). That protects you in both directions: buying lab-grown, you know what the lower price reflects; buying natural, the report documents the origin represented for that stone.

Price

What you are actually paying for

For the same shape, carat, color, clarity and cut, a lab-grown diamond costs meaningfully less than a natural one. We will not pin a percentage on it — the gap moves with size, grade and market — but it is large enough that most shoppers face a real choice: the same stone for considerably less, or a noticeably larger or finer stone for the same budget.

The reasons are structural. A natural diamond’s price carries exploration, mining, sorting and a long chain of intermediaries — plus genuine scarcity in the top grades. A grown diamond’s price mostly reflects production: reactors, energy, cutting and grading. As growing has become more efficient, that cost has fallen.

Supply

Where prices go from here — honestly

This deserves plain words: lab-grown supply is growing, production keeps getting cheaper, and retail prices have trended downward for several years. They may continue to drift lower. Natural supply, by contrast, is finite — but scarcity has not translated into resale strength for ordinary retail stones either.

How much should a falling price curve weigh on your decision? Only as much as you plan to sell — which, for jewelry bought to mark an engagement or a milestone, is usually never. Choose lab-grown for what it gives you today: the beauty, transparent product specifications and budget headroom. Do not choose it hoping it will appreciate, and do not choose natural for that reason either — as we cover below, neither origin resells anywhere near retail. If a price drop after purchase would genuinely bother you, weigh that feeling now; it is a fair input to the decision.

Sustainability

Ethics and environment, without the gloss

A lab-grown diamond is produced in a controlled growth chamber rather than extracted through diamond mining. Its total environmental impact depends on factors such as the growth method, energy source, cutting, setting and transport. If environmental performance matters to your decision, ask any seller for current, product-specific evidence.

Mining’s ledger has two sides, and fairness demands both. Open-pit and alluvial mining move rock and water, and parts of the trade’s history carry serious labor and traceability problems. Yet regulated modern mining also employs and funds entire communities — in Botswana, diamonds underwrite much of the national economy. Choosing a grown stone is a preference for a laboratory-grown origin, not proof of a lower total impact and not a verdict on the people who mine.

Living with it

Durability and insurance

Durability is the easiest section of this guide: there is no difference. Same crystal, same 10 on the Mohs scale, same resistance to scratching and wear. A lab-grown diamond in a well-made setting is every bit an everyday, decades-long stone, and it needs exactly the same care — occasional cleaning and a periodic prong check.

Insurance treats the two origins alike as well. Both can be insured at replacement value under a homeowner’s rider or a standalone jewelry policy; an insurer may request the receipt, a current appraisal and any supplied grading report. Value over time

Resale honesty: neither is a nest egg

Here is the sentence some jewelers avoid: neither a lab-grown nor a natural diamond is a reliable place to store money. Second-hand buyers pay a fraction of retail for both — a retail price includes cutting, setting, documentation and margin that no resale recovers, and dealers can always source fresh stones at wholesale. Falling production costs add pressure on the lab-grown side; on the natural side, only rare categories — exceptional sizes, colors and provenance — have historically defied that gravity, and an engagement ring is almost never among them.

What both origins do hold is meaning. A ring worn for thirty years and passed on carries a value no second-hand market prices. Buy the stone for the life it will live on your hand, and keep any supplied documentation with its order record.

How to choose: a five-question framework

Five questions settle almost every case we see in consultations:

  • Is maximum beauty for the budget the goal? Choose lab-grown. Same grades, lower price — or a finer stone for the same spend.
  • Does the billion-year origin genuinely move you? Then natural is a legitimate, honest choice — pay the premium knowingly. At Signora, natural diamonds are available by special request; lab-grown is our default.
  • Is environmental performance the deciding factor? Lab-grown describes origin, not total impact. Growth method, energy source, cutting, setting and transport all matter, so ask for current, product-specific evidence.

Grades being equal, the stone itself is identical — every difference above traces back to origin, supply and price, not to beauty or durability.

Common mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes — by chemistry, by optics and by regulation. It is pure crystallized carbon, identical to a mined diamond, and the U.S. FTC’s definition of a diamond no longer includes the word “natural”. Can a jeweler tell my diamond is lab-grown?

Not by eye, and not with a loupe. Standard diamond testers read it as diamond, because it is one. Identifying origin takes specialized laboratory instruments that detect growth patterns. In practice, origin is established by the grading report and the microscopic girdle inscription many certified stones carry — not by looking at the stone.

Are lab-grown diamonds graded more leniently?

No. IGI and the other major laboratories grade lab-grown stones on exactly the same color, cut, clarity and carat scales as natural ones. The only difference on the report is disclosure: it states the stone is laboratory-grown and typically names the growth method. A VS1 means the same thing on either report.

Should I wait for lab-grown prices to fall further?

Prices may drift lower, but waiting trades certain years of wear for uncertain savings on a piece you intend to keep for decades. If the stone marks this year’s engagement or anniversary, buy it for this year. Since neither origin is bought to be resold, a later price change costs you nothing in practice.

Is a natural diamond the smarter financial choice?

No — and neither is lab-grown. Both origins resell for a fraction of retail, so the premium paid for natural does not come back at resale on ordinary stones. If preserving money is the goal, jewelry is the wrong vehicle altogether. Choose the origin whose story you value at the price asked.

Can I insure a lab-grown diamond?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds can be insured at replacement value; the insurer may request the receipt, a current appraisal and any grading report supplied for the stone or finished piece.
