Composition

What each stone actually is

A lab-grown diamond is diamond — carbon atoms locked in the same cubic crystal as a mined stone, grown above ground in a matter of weeks. Moissanite is a different mineral altogether: silicon carbide, a crystal of carbon and silicon. Henri Moissan first identified it in 1893 in fragments from an Arizona meteor crater, and natural crystals remain so scarce that essentially every moissanite in jewelry today is lab-created. That origin matters, because moissanite is not a diamond imitation the way cubic zirconia is — it is its own gem species, with its own chemistry and its own way of handling light. Durability

Hardness and everyday durability

Diamond sits at 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest known natural material. Moissanite sits at 9.25, which places it above sapphire and ruby at 9, and above every other gem you are likely to wear. The Mohs scale is not evenly spaced, so diamond is meaningfully harder than its one-notch lead suggests — but in daily life the distinction rarely matters. Household dust contains quartz, at 7; both stones shrug it off, and neither will dull from ordinary wear the way softer gems can.

Hardness is scratch resistance; toughness is chip resistance, and here the two are closer than the numbers imply. Diamond has cleavage planes and can chip from a sharp knock at an unlucky angle; moissanite has no such planes and takes impacts well. In practice, both are excellent choices for a ring worn every day — including an engagement ring.

Light

Brilliance and fire: how each stone handles light

Two numbers explain almost every visible difference between these stones. The first is refractive index — how strongly a stone bends light. Diamond measures 2.42; moissanite measures around 2.65, so it returns slightly more light overall. The second is dispersion — how much a stone splits white light into rainbow color, what jewelers call fire. Diamond's dispersion is 0.044. Moissanite's is roughly 0.104 — more than double.

That gap is the signature difference. A well-cut diamond reads as crisp, white sparkle with strong contrast — an even, composed light. Moissanite reads livelier: in direct sun it throws distinct rainbow flashes, an effect often described as a disco-ball. Some people fall for it instantly; others prefer the diamond's quieter, whiter return. Neither response is wrong — they are two personalities of light.

One quirk worth knowing: moissanite is doubly refractive — under magnification its back facets can appear faintly doubled, one way a jeweler identifies it. To the naked eye, it simply looks bright.

Color

Color behavior in the real world

Modern moissanite is grown near-colorless, and most stones sold today sit in the equivalent of the upper diamond color grades. Two real-world behaviors are still worth knowing before you choose. First, in strong sunlight moissanite's fire can flash rainbow color across the whole stone — dramatic and beautiful, but different from a diamond's whiter light. Second, some moissanite shows a faint warm or grayish cast in certain lighting, and the effect becomes easier to spot as stones get larger — a one-carat stone will read whiter than a three-carat of the same grade.

Price

Price: what the difference buys you

Moissanite costs a fraction of a lab-grown diamond at the same size — and a lab-grown diamond already costs well below a comparable mined stone. We avoid quoting fixed figures because prices move with size, quality, and setting — but the relationship holds at every size, and the larger the stone, the wider the gap.

What matters is what that difference lets you do. At a fixed budget, moissanite buys visibly more millimeters — a center stone a size or two up — or frees room to upgrade the setting itself, say from 14K gold to 18K or platinum Pt950. Choosing the lab-grown diamond puts the budget into the stone's identity instead: a certified diamond, perhaps in a more modest size. Both are honest ways to spend; they simply answer different priorities. Care

Cleaning and care

Both stones ask for the same easy routine: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a soft brush, a rinse, and a pat dry. That is all either needs. What dulls them is never the stone but a film of skin oils, lotion, and soap residue — one that shows slightly sooner on moissanite, which is where the cloudy-moissanite myth comes from. The film wipes off; the stone beneath is unchanged.

Resale, honestly

We would rather lose a sale than have you buy on a false premise, so here it is plainly: neither stone is a way to store money. Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen steadily as production has scaled, and moissanite has little organized secondhand market at all. Nor is a mined diamond the escape route — most resell far below what was paid.

The honest frame is this: fine jewelry returns its value in the wearing, not the reselling. Buy the stone you will love looking at for decades, set in solid metal that lasts, at a price that felt fair on the day. Measured that way, both of these stones hold up beautifully.

Question one: does owning a diamond matter to you? Not to anyone else — to you. If the answer is yes, choose the lab-grown diamond and do not look back. It is a real diamond, with a whiter, more composed sparkle, an IGI report, and the full weight of the word. No moissanite, however lovely, feels right to someone who wanted a diamond.

Question two: if the diamond name is not the point, which would you rather hold — a certified diamond at a modest size, or maximum presence and a livelier, more colorful sparkle for the same budget? That is moissanite's honest case: more millimeters, more fire, more freedom in the setting.

Frequently asked questions

Does moissanite pass a diamond tester?

Often, yes — and it helps to know why. Common handheld testers measure thermal conductivity, and moissanite conducts heat much as diamond does, so a basic pen tester will frequently read it as diamond. Testers that also measure electrical conductivity tell the two apart reliably, which is what jewelers use. That is why certificates matter more than gadgets: GRA states plainly that your stone is moissanite; IGI confirms a diamond is a diamond.

Will moissanite get cloudy over time?

No. Silicon carbide is chemically stable — the stone itself does not cloud, yellow, or degrade with age. What people sometimes notice is a surface film of lotion, soap, and skin oils, which dulls any stone's sparkle and tends to show a little sooner on moissanite. It wipes away with warm water and mild soap, and the full brilliance returns.

Is moissanite a fake diamond?

No. A fake — properly, a simulant — imitates a diamond's look without owning its properties; cubic zirconia is the classic example. Moissanite is a distinct gem species with its own chemistry, its own optics, and its own certification, and it is always disclosed as such. Choose it as moissanite, for its own fire and its own price, and it never has to stand in anything's shadow.

Can anyone tell moissanite from a diamond just by looking?

Side by side in bright sunlight, an attentive eye can often spot the difference — moissanite flashes noticeably more rainbow color, while a diamond returns whiter light. On the hand, in passing, most people cannot tell — especially at smaller sizes. A jeweler can spot moissanite's faintly doubled back facets under magnification; across a dinner table, nobody is running that test.

Is moissanite durable enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is harder than sapphire, a stone that has served in engagement rings for centuries, and it resists chipping well because it lacks diamond's cleavage planes.
