If a coffin, hexagon or Dutch marquise stone has caught you, have it — but go in with your eyes open. An unusual outline commits you to four things a round or an oval does not: a wedding band that will almost certainly need shaping or notching to sit flush; a centre stone that cannot be replaced from a drawer of standard sizes; a shank whose resizing room depends on how tightly it was built around that outline; and a bench that must protect the points and corners, which changes the profile and feel on the hand. None of that is a reason to walk away. It is a set of questions far easier to ask before the ring is made than after.
This is not another shape guide but a consequences guide. A note on names first: the coffin cut is an elongated six-sided outline and nothing more, but it carries a word some would rather not say at an engagement party. It is often listed as an elongated hexagon, and if the name grates, use that.
A round solitaire sits above a straight band with a small, tidy gap. A hexagon, coffin or Dutch marquise does not: their corners and points reach past the setting in ways a straight band cannot follow, leaving a wedge of daylight — or calling for a band shaped to meet them.
A notched band stays mostly straight, with a precise cutout milled where the two rings meet. A contoured band curves along the profile so the pair read as one piece. Both are usually made to one specific ring, and benches prefer that ring in hand, or an accurate model of it, because a millimetre of error shows.
A fitted band is therefore married to one ring: odd worn alone, harder to resize afterwards because the notch must stay in register with the stone, and possibly redundant if the engagement ring is ever reset. Ask your maker whether they can make the matching band, whether it must be made at the same time, and what becomes of it if the ring changes. Plenty of people simply decide they like the gap; that is a good answer too, and a better decision than surprise.
Calibrated stones — cut to standard millimetre sizes so a jeweller can drop one straight into an existing seat — exist for many shapes, hexagons among them, in small accent sizes. Where that standard sizing runs out is exactly where an unusual centre stone lives: a particular length-to-width ratio, a particular corner angle, in a seat made for it and nothing else.
So if such a stone is ever lost or badly damaged, the honest general answer is that replacing it becomes a commission. Someone has to source or cut a stone to those measurements, and the setting has to be adjusted to receive it. Benches do this routinely; it is simply not the same afternoon a round 6.5mm would be. Ask your own maker how they would handle it, before you need to.
Two things make it easier later. Keep the paperwork: every stone we set is IGI-certified with its report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, and the report carries the exact measurements a future bench would need. And insure the ring on those measurements rather than a loose description — a policy promising "like for like" can only deliver it if someone wrote down what "like" means. A plain shank with a clear stretch of metal at the back resizes easily either way. The constraint arrives when a design closes that gap. Pavé running most of the way round, a shank that steps or tapers to meet an angled corner, or a bezel wrapping the stone's straight sides all reduce how much a jeweller can cut away and rejoin without disturbing settings. A full eternity band has no plain section at all, which is why full eternities generally cannot be sized conventionally — there is nowhere to cut that does not run through stones.
Unusual outlines nudge designs towards exactly these features, because a strong geometric stone wants a strong geometric shank. So ask at the drawing stage how many sizes the design can go up and down, and have the finger measured properly, not guessed. If a wide range matters — pregnancy, warm climates, hands that swell — say so early and ask for a plainer back half. It costs nothing to specify and buys years of flexibility.
Every sharp point and crisp corner is thinner than the rest of the stone, and thin edges chip. This is why marquise, pear and princess stones are conventionally held by V-prongs, sometimes called chevron prongs: a notched prong that cradles the tip and carries the force of a knock away from the most vulnerable spot. A coffin or hexagon gives the bench six corners to think about; a Dutch marquise, two true points and four angled corners. A round gives it none.
Protection is not free, aesthetically. A V-prong covers a small triangle at each point, softening the very geometry you chose the shape for. A bezel or partial bezel guards the whole edge and sits smoothly against the finger, but hides the girdle and can make the outline read slightly smaller. A high, open setting shows the shape off beautifully and catches on knitwear more. Straight sides also sit against the neighbouring finger differently from a curve, so try on an angular stone in roughly the right size if you can, and look at the side profile as well as the view from above. One quirk to know, as of August 2026: GIA issues an overall cut grade for round brilliants only, and although it plans to extend cut grading to ovals, pears and marquises in 2027, that still leaves our three out. IGI has graded the cut of nine fancy shapes since 2022 — again, not these. Your report will carry polish, symmetry, colour, clarity and precise measurements, but no letter grade telling you the cut is good, so judge with your eyes and the numbers. And because most of these shapes are step cuts, remember that step faceting is a window rather than a mask: inclusions a brilliant would hide behind sparkle sit in plain view under a broad flat table.

Everything above is a list of consequences, not objections. The people happiest with an unusual cut tend to share a few traits.
The honest counter-case: if you know you will add rings over the years, if you resize often, or if a made-to-order wait years from now would bother you, a well-cut oval or emerald will make you happier. There is no shame in that. The best ring is the one whose consequences you are glad to live with.
